Initiative StadtBauKultur NRW
Welcome to the 'Initiative StadtBauKultur NRW'
(Initiative for a better built environement in North Rhine-Westphalia)
These pages inform you about all the projects and partners, current publications and events. The spread of projects – like baukultur itself – is constantly changing. The review of the projects of the year 2008/2009 is also for the english speaking community as well the BAUKULTUR ABC which you´ll find under www.baukultur-abc.de.
The initiative, which is set up 2001 by the Minister for Building and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia for the period of ten years, seeks to raise the consciousness of the public for the built environment, to stimulate discussions and to point approaches that help to achieve a built environment which is good to live in. [As we learned from our partners in Europe, there is no adequate translation for 'baukultur' in the English language that is why we use the German idiom.]
Meanwhile more than a hundred projects were realised with the numerous partners of the initiative as the architecture chamber, the chamber of engineers, the universities of architecture and urban planning, the museums in Germany´s largest federal state North Rhine-Westphalia. The projects are all presented under the quality label 'Initiative StadtBauKultur NRW'. Since October 2002 the various activities are organised and supported by the Europäisches Haus der Stadtkultur (European House of Urban Culture) in Gelsenkirchen, located at the former IBA Emscher Park Headquarter.
The Europäisches Haus der Stadtkultur is the communication interface of the Initiative StadtBauKultur NRW. This is where many projects from this wide-ranging initiative for more baukultur are developed, co-ordinated and linked with one another. Within the framework of the 2008 started campaign SEHEN LERNEN mobile ‚viewing stations’ by the architect Andy Brauneis (with Nicolette Baumeister and Christian Schüller) will direct the public eye to successful and not-so-successful sites in our towns and cities. The Europäisches Haus der Stadtkultur will also support the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 with its know-how in the field of baukultur.
One major project of the Europäisches Haus der Stadtkultur is the Baukultur Salon in cooperation with the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.
The Baukultur Salon stands for lively discussions and exchange of experience related to the baukultur of the European Capitals of Culture. Since June 2007 several cities presented their programmes on baukultur in the stadtbauraum at Gelsenkirchen (www.stadtbauraum.nrw.de). The meetings resulted in impressive images, inspiring programmes and intelligent proposals, which have made a valuable contribution to preparations for the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 and travelled through Germany in 2010.
