Seeing baukultur
Baukultur is all-encompassing and influences everybody. Yet, the qualities of the built environment – or the lack of it – are rarely noticed. We want to sharpen the perception residents have of their cities in order to give them an understanding what a difference it makes if planning and design decisions are solely based on function or whether the HOW is taken into consideration. For baukultur to be understood by everyone, it has to be accessible, focused on target groups, and communicated directly. The mobile SEHSTATION is part of the campaign SEHEN LERNEN which once again tours cities in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2010. The SEHSTATION highlights successes and failures, existing buildings and future plans in the public space. Numerous town and city walks, discussions and activities with children will help to train the eye so that everybody can look more discerningly at the built environment.
“Baukultur for me has many facets: cities and towns that are loved and lived in, a sensitive handling of our architectural heritage and more quality of planning and construction. Buzzing squares, quite corners – negotiated together and designed for each other. Places in which we are content, which have been built with people in mind, and places which invite and embrace us. The city of the future is one for us and future generations because baukultur means a better quality of life for all of us – and we could all need some more of that …“
