Stadt:Mensch:Heimat: Discussing baukultur /// The cities and towns in North Rhine-Westphalia are being confronted with new challenges. What should be done, what must be done, and what can be done in concrete terms in the urban agglomerations of the Rhine and Ruhr and in the more rural parts of Westphalia and the Rhineland? How must towns and cities be rebuilt in order to cope with global, economic and demographic challenges, as well as those concerning energy, culture and society? The conference Stadt:Mensch:Heimat: aimed to provide answers to these questions through a dialogue between the academic community and practitioners. | 25th January 2010 | Bundeshaus Bonn | www.stadtbaukultur.nrw.de/kongress

Architekturquartett NRW Discussing baukultur /// Architecture is invigorated by dialogues. For this reason, the Chamber of architects of North Rhine-Westphalia has been holding a regular Architekturquartett NRW since mid 2008. In a salon-like setting, architects, town planners, journalists and specialists of various disciplines exchange their views on new buildings or building projects. A general theme is always used as a guide for selecting the building projects and speakers. The aim is to provide the architectural debate in North RhineWestphalia with an additional impulse. | 24th March 2010 Folkwang Museum Essen | www.aknw.de

Perspektive Stadt Discussing baukultur /// Our quality of life is reduced by noise, traffic and air pollution. Unequal chances arise as a result of social conflicts, poverty and loneliness. What do we expect from future urban life? Can we delegate the design of the town or city in which we live, work and spend our free time to town planners, architects and politicians? Ensuring that cities have the ability to pool the energies of their people, companies and institutions must become the task of everyone. This is the aspiration of the editors of the publication Perspektive Stadt, Dr.-Ing. Franz Pesch, Prof. Dr. Rainer Danielzyk, Prof. Sigurd Trommer and Heinrich Sahnen. The book is published since January 2010.

Bauherrenseminare Discussing baukultur /// “Vom Traum zum Haus” is the slogan that has been used by the architects of North Rhine-Westphalia since the beginning of 2008 to inform private homebuilders about the ins and outs of the planning process for home construction and modernisation. In seminars that are held in various towns and cities across North Rhine-Westphalia, those who attend learn how quality-led design and planning can create a custom-made home. The seminars attach great importance to sustainable functionality, a secure budget and quality of life. | all year round in different towns and cities across North Rhine-Westphalia | www.aknw.de

Bochumer Stadtgespräche Discussing baukultur /// The Bochumer Stadtgespräche have been taking place in the Bochum Museum on current topics in the domains of architecture, town planning and urban development since the year 2000. The chosen topic does not, however, simply represent a Bochum centric view of things, but also ensures a look further afield in order to accommodate broader perspectives. Topics such as public space planning, retail, education, culture and transport as well as urban planning and strategies are part of the discussion. | 28th April, 19th May, 2nd June and 7th July 2010 | Bochum Museum | www.bochum.de

Hausgespräche Discussing baukultur /// As a joint project between those involved in the cultural sector from the domains of architecture, design, photography and journalism, Freihaus MS has been contributing to the debate on urbanism, town planning and architecture for more than five years. Hausgespräche, faithful to the almost forgotten tradition of the salon, are a particular form of this contribution. Here, speakers talk about their work and their projects, followed by discussions with the audience. | 30th April 2010 Frank Schneider | Phalt, Zürich, 13th May 2010 Hochhaus Audiobook of Paul Plamper, 25th June 2010 Mark Lee JohnstonMarklee, Los Angeles | 20 p.m. | Hüfferstr. 20, Münster | www.freihaus.ms

neue freundschaften – baukultur in bonn Discussing baukultur /// The event series neue freundschaften is offering an insightful urban walk through the centre of Bonn in 2010 in which various development stages of the city centre are to be presented. This is accompanied by discussions at the Bonner Kunstverein. This series of events is aimed at (re)invigorating the dialogue about what characterises good architecture in the federal city of Bonn. The audience is not architecture-specific but made of up of the city’s discerning minds, curious citizens and students. 17th March and 5th May 2010 as well as two dates in Autumn 2010 | Bonner Kunstverein | www.baukultur-in-bonn.de

BILDUNG.BAUEN Which kind of spaces does education need, which learning environment does city need? Discussing baukultur /// In order to provide ideal con-ditions for the intellectual, emotional and social development of children society needs educational institutions which support learning also through their architecture. A constant dialogue between the different stakeholders can help to figure out these architectural needs. Topics of the event series of the BDA Bund Deutscher Architekten of North Rhine-Westfalia in 2010 are educational institutions in an urban context, planned or already built schools and kindergardens, as well as their influence on their users and the neighbourhood they are loacated in. | 25th October to 8th November 2010 | Dusseldorf and further places in North Rhine-Westphalia | www.bda-nrw.de

SEHEN LERNEN Seeing baukultur /// As part of the SEHEN LERNEN campaign, the mobile SEHSTATION is touring through a further four cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, supplemented with ten oversized windows. In each city, it is positioned in a central location to focus on a city-specific urban topic. After touring through nine cities in 2008 and 2009, the SEHSTATION started its third and final tour in May 2010 in Rheda-Wiedenbrück with the theme of a divided city. The SEHSTATION will then travel to Dortmund, where it will highlight the redesigning of parts of inner-city public space. Afterwards the SEHSTATION will come to Eastern Westphalia again. Starting at the Jahnplatz it will deal with the urban life in Bielefeld. The final of the three-year tour will take place in the late summer. | 30th April 2010 Rheda-Wiedenbrück | 05th June 2010 Dortmund | 30th June 2010 Bielefeld | www.sehenlernen.nrw.de

Tag der Architektur Seeing baukultur /// More than 40,000 visitors, over 535 locations where new and renovated buildings could be visited, as well as 185 cities and municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia in which houses, flats, parks and gardens were open to the public – the figures from the Tag der Architektur speak for themselves. Every year, architects, interior designers, landscape architects and town planners, along with the property owners and developers, make themselves available to receive visitors and present newly completed buildings or newly designed gardens. In 2010 more than in the years before will be shown: over 550 in North Rhine-Westphalia. | 26th/27th June 2010 | various towns and cities in North Rhine-Westphalia | www.aknw.de

Entdecke deine Stadt Learning about baukultur /// Children enjoy asking questions, particularly between the ages of eight and twelve. They walk through life with a heightened sense of aware-ness and are conscious of the built environment around them: is it interesting? friendly? Can they visit their friends by their own without putting themselves in danger? Children know instinctively what works and what doesn’t in their town or city. With the publication Entdecke deine Stadt, they learn that the good and bad solutions in a city are always the result of decisions many people have made, including the city’s residents. They also learn that they can already make a contribution to improving the quality of life in their own city. The publication was put together jointly with the children’s book author Anke Leitzgen and appeared in August 2010.

BAUKULTUR ABC Learning about baukultur /// Since June 2009, the BAUKULTUR ABC website has included interactive educational games for children and young people. Three different games with several levels are provided for children from eight years on. The website provides a photographic excursion through our parks, cities, and public squares. It also focuses on details that range from paving and materials to windows and doors. Very often, people no longer register these details – their significance for the overall visual impression of the city is underestimated. | www.baukultur-abc.de

Architektur macht Schule! Learning about baukultur /// Every day children and young people live and learn in a man made environment but in the classroom little attention is devoted to the themes of living, architecture and urban development. In order to change this, the Chamber of architects of North Rhine-Westphalia has launched the programme Architektur macht Schule! with the aim to encourage children and teenagers to get a feeling for the quality of their built envrionment. This includes real projects which are going to be executed with the help of committed architects, as well as a series of architecture lessons in schools. | all year round | various towns and cities in North Rhine-Westphalia | www.architektur-macht-schule.de

Ich sehe was, was Du nicht siehst ... Learning about baukultur /// During the summer holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia the organisation Jugend Architektur Stadt will once again be inviting children and young people to the stadtbauraum centre for the 2010 summer academy. In four groups – architecture, landscape planning, town planning, and urban design – and under the banner of one theme, young participants will have the opportunity to paint, make and build. In a subsequent exhi-bition, the children will display their results to friends, parents and interested members of the public. | 15th to 18th July 2010 | stadtbauraum in Gelsenkirchen | www.jugend-architektur-stadt.de

Kirchen im Wandel. Best practise examples Preserving baukultur /// Social changes are putting a central part of our architectural heritage into question – churches. Declining congregations, reduced tax revenues and increasing costs for building maintenance are leading to the abandonment, conversion, or even demolition of churches. The clearly set-out examples provide ideas for future conversions. However, they also set limits to the extent to which churches can be converted for a new use without losing their architectural identity. The publication, which has been jointly produced with the Rhenisch and Westphalian authorities for the preservation of historical monuments, will appear in September 2010.

Umnutzung von Kirchen. Documentation of exemplary processes Preserving baukultur /// The current issue of church conversions is connected to structural changes in our society. Church buildings represent a particularly sensitive part of our community and its physical structures. Feasibility studies were funded to investigate a broad spectrum of problem. The results describe development processes and present ideas for new uses, as well as suggestions for further conversions. The documentation of the exemplary studies from the Ministry for Building and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia will appear in spring 2010.

Internet Museum Baukultur online /// As a museum without its own premises, the M:AI Museum für Architektur und Ingenieurkunst NRW uses the internet for presenting architecture and civil engineering in North Rhine-West-phalia. In this way, virtual information and discussion rooms emerge which tackle topics of architectural debate and prepare and accompany exhibition projects. They are enhanced and complemented with portraits, picture series, interviews and reports, and they provide introductions to the topics. Over time these fulfil the M:AI Museum’s task of presenting the work of architects and engineers, their buildings and structures, and topical subjects from North Rhine-Westphalia. | www.mai.nrw.de

BAUWATCH.MOBI Baukultur online /// The perception and experience of cities and spaces will change in the coming years with the use of the mobile internet. But how should the information be formatted for mobile internet, and how should the interfaces be designed and implemented in a meaningful and intelligent way? These questions are being pursued by BAUWATCH.MOBI in order to develop pioneering solutions. This will turn the online architectural guide at koeln-architektur.de into a mobile city information system which can be accessed from mobiles and smartphones, providinga good insight into the most recent architectural history of the city with nearly 100 projects of contemporary architecture in Cologne. | www.koelnarchitektur.de

B1|A40 – Die Schönheit der großen Straße Experiencing baukultur /// B1|A40 – Die Schönheit der großen Straße is an urban experiment by the artist Markus Ambach and orange edge. It will be implemented as an exhibition along the motorway for two months in 2010 in order to highlight the long term development of this unusual urban space. The A40 is the long, anonymous backbone of the Ruhr. Allotments and roadside shopping developments, artistic production and black economy, energy production and fish farms – all use the road as their infrastructure and platform, turning the highway into a nexus. | 12th June to 8th August 2010 | www.ruhr2010.de/B1-A40

Parkautobahn A42 Experiencing baukultur /// For 30 kilometres the A42 motorway runs parallel to the River Emscher and the Rhine Herne Canal – straight through the Emscher Landscape Park. The people in the approximately 80,000 vehicles that use the stretch of road every day often have no idea that they are driving through one of the most unusual parks in the world. The idea behind the redesign of the A42 is to integrate transport infrastructure into an urban landscape. This includes comprehensive greening measures along the motorway verge as well as the erection of roadside installations. The project is being implemented over the coming years, with the first change along the Parkautobahn being visible in 2010. | all year round | www.ruhr2010.de/parkautobahn

Route der Wohnkultur Experiencing baukultur /// Based on the five cities of Dortmund, Bochum, Essen, Oberhausen and Duisburg, we gain an impression of what daily life is like in the Ruhr: what do the terms settlement and neighbourhood mean to us? How did we live in the past, and how do we live today? How will we live when we are old? Why do we live in this building? And which period is our sofa from? The Route der Wohnkultur of the bureau STADTIDEE, Dortmund, bridges the gap between the individual piece of furniture and the region as a whole, and in doing so provides an insight into occupied dwellings. | WohnkulturSommer from August to October 2010 | Tag der Wohnkultur on 19th September 2010 | in various cities of the Ruhr | www.routederwohnkultur.de

Heimat zeigen! Experiencing baukultur /// With its interactive project Heimat zeigen!, the Bund Deutscher Landschaftsarchitekten (bdla) is not only targeting landscape architects and specialists, but all people who are interested in their home and its surroundings. Everyone can achieve their ideas and wishes in this project: together or individually, either in an organised, planned, spontaneous or multifaceted way. A sight seeing tour of the region’s public and hidden highlights emerges from the many diverse activities; a tour of discovery introduces the participant to exemplary new innovative parks and gardens, cycling routes, specialised jargon, or simply barbecuing sausages in the allotment. | all year round | in various cities of the Ruhr | www.bdlanw.bdla.de

plan – forum for contempory architecture Baukultur festival /// The idea behind plan – forum of contemporary architecture, is to showcase architecture directly and in many cases at the buildings. Architecture and urban development are to be extensively experienced and discussed over a week-long period. Part of this includes project contributions from national and international universities, workshops, symposiums, discussions, tours with various approaches to alternative perceptions of cities, installations and interventions, as well as exhibitions which look at architecture, towns and cities and urban spaces. The architectural festival plan organises a programme of events scattered across Cologne every year. | 24th September to 1st October 2010 | Cologne | www.plan-project.com

Dynamik und Wandel der Städte am Rhein, which is shown by the M:AI Museum für Architektur und Ingenieurkunst NRW from November 2010 to February 2011. These cities provide examples of transformation processes in urban agglomerations across Europe. In addition to plans and projects, the exhibition also introduces visitors with planers who have been (and continue to be) influential in terms of urban development, as well as exploring current questions of urban planning. | www.mai.nrw.de

The joining programme shows the specific working conditions and methods of this scene followed by discussions. | 12th September to 14th November 2010 | Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen | www.ludwig-forum.de

Mies van der Rohe Award 2009 Exhibiting baukultur /// The 49 finalists of the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture 2009 are the focus of a new exhibition which is being shown in 2010 at the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex (its only appearance in Germany) at the initiative of the M:AI Museum für Architektur und Ingenieurkunst NRW in cooperation with the Deutsches Architektur Museum in Frankfurt. The prize is one of the most coveted in Europe. It recognises particularly high quality, innovative and sustainable archi-tecture. Held every two years, the presentation of the winning buildings and structures reflects the current state of architecture in Europe. | 21th March to 20th April 2010 | www.mai.nrw.de

Rheinelbe – art in nature Exhibiting baukultur /// Herman Prigann was one of the most important representatives of the “art in nature” movement. In 1996, his art transformed the derelict mining land in Rheinelbe into an industrial forest which united aesthetics with ecology: sculptures were situated across the grounds, and a waste tip was transformed into a walkable “Jacob’s ladder”. All of Prigann’s interventions are in harmony with the place and its history. As part of the decentralised project of the Culture Capital 2010, the M:AI Museum für Architektur und Ingenieurkunst NRW shows “Two Hills – one Landscape” in the forest that covers the former mine, a retrospective overview of the work of the designer who died in 2008. | 16th May to 26th September 2010 | Rheinelbe in Gelsenkirchen | www.mai.nrw.de

NRW wohnt. Awarding baukultur /// More communication between architects and the housing industry; more exchanges between these groups and end-consumers; a closer networking of the people who are responsible for and shape both life and the way we live in North Rhine-Westphalia – these are the aims of the forum NRW wohnt. from the Chamber of architects of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2008 and 2009, six decentralised events took place on topics such as “living in unusual places”, “living with a social conscience”, or “living in rural areas”. During the Ruhr’s reign as capital of culture in 2010, a large NRW wohnt. closing event draws together the results of the forum. At the same time the best works of the photo competition “Wohn(t)räume – Lebensräume” will be awarded. | Closing event 19th April 2010 | Zollverein Essen | www.nrw-wohnt.de

Temporary City. Student competetion of six international universities Awarding baukultur /// What is the value of temporary events and non permanent special installations? What contribution can they make to a lively European baukultur? – This is the theme of a joint project of the three European Capitals of Culture in 2010. During their twelve month reign, Istanbul, Pécs and Duisburg (representing the Ruhr) will host temporary interventions in urban spaces that will draw attention to the different cultural expressions of the “European city” and test new ideas for their design. Istanbul (June 2010) | Opening Duisburg 12th September 2010 | Ending picnic 26th September 2010 | Pécs (autumn 2010) | www.temporaere-stadt.de

Auszeichnung vorbildlicher Bauten in Nordrhein-Westfalen 2010 Awarding baukultur /// Awards for exemplary developments apply to new constructions, renovations, modernisations, and redevelopments. They aim to show that a planning culture is an essential prerequisite for baukultur and a fundamental building block of the quality of the places in which we live, work and stay. All types of building and structures are eligible for the competition. Until the 7th May contributions can be submitted; the jury is scheduled to meet at 24th Juni, and the award ceremony is planned for autumn 2010. | www.aknw.de
