Preserving baukultur

“Preserving our architectural heritage“ is more than simply preserving the past. It is a complex web of shaping and giving identities, ecological and economic renewal, as well as urban regeneration. Our monuments and historic buildings shape our townscapes and tell stories about the past. Their demolition – so often demanded for regeneration and renewal projects – cannot be a solution for they are the witnesses of our roots and identity. Instead, prominent examples of our heritage must be protected and developed. Religious buildings, in particular, reflect the architectural history of North Rhine-Westphalia. For this reason, the opportunities and stumbling blocks which the conversion of historical buildings and churches present, are an important focus for StadtBauKultur NRW projects. These include the publication Kirchen im Wandel in cooperation with the Rhenisch and Westphalian authorities for the preservation of historical monuments, and the documentation of seventeen studies on exemplary Umnutzung von Kirchen in the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
