Learning about
baukultur We recycle, talk about reducing CO2 emissions, or exchange our old light-bulbs for energy-saving ones. We do this not least because at school we were encouraged to be actively involved in environmentalism. To turn children into adults who understand the language of baukultur is not part of today’s curricula in primary schools and in secondary education. But only those who have learned to understand baukultur, have the ability to question it, and thus can play an active role in discussions about the design of the built environment. Some of StadtBauKultur NRW’s projects such as the children‘s book Entdecke deine Stadt, the internet platform BAUKULTUR ABC with its many games, or the school project Architektur macht Schule! of the Chamber of architects of North Rhine-Westphalia deliberately focus on the next generations. We turn to children as the future decision makers, property developers, and users of our cities.
