Awarding baukultur
The platform NRW wohnt. from the Chamber of architects of North Rhine-Westphalia aims to uncover architectural potential and wants to encourage public discussion of this. Visions and perspectives for life and living in North Rhine-Westphalia will be awarded. But what is baukultur? What are the criteria by which to judge it? In addition to subjective perceptions, there are other aspects which can be more objectively evaluated such as authenticity, scale, materials, urban integration, historical continuity and innovation. Not just planners, architects or politicians should be part of this discussion but also the user of the building whose quality of life is directly affected by the built world around us. This is the reason why baukultur can also always be measured by the quality of planning and communication processes. Thus, the international student competition Temporary City looks for temporarely solutions for challenging urban situations. The most convincing design in 2010 will be realised in the European Capitals of Culture Pécs, Istanbul and Duisburg (representing the Ruhr).
“Diversity enriches, but can also lead to confusion. Competitions and awards draw attention to buildings and other architectural structures that are good examples
of innovation, have a high standard of quality and that can provide a sense of orientation. We want to create enthusiasm for intelligent architects who provide architectural answers to questions concerning the future design of our society.”
